The streets, clustered with quaint cottages, are tortuous and cobbled. The breeze, gently stroking the face, is salty and brisk. And the smell of fish and chips wafting around is ubiquitous. Plus a streak of perfect sandy beach, rewarded for its cleanness. This is what St Ives is about. Serene and picturesque, like many other Cornish resorts, but still with its own style and uniqueness. No wonder that St Ives became the place of congregation for artists, coming here in numbers for their inspiration. The local folklore is rich with yarns too. There is tear jerking story about a ship that was wrecked at the ragged shores of the village long time ago. The natives were rescuing the drawing people. And there was one lady on the deck, clasping her baby. She wanted to be moved to the boat only with her infant, and didn't entrust anybody to hold her baby. The woman's intractability cost her little one it's life. While mother and baby were transported from the ship to the boat, he was swept to the sea from the hands of the weary woman, and never found. The broken hearted mother couldn't recover after the loss, and died shortly after. Her body is said to be resting in piece in the local cemetery, but her soul is still unsettled. If any wandering lights appear on the beach before a storm, they say that it's Lady with the lantern that scours the beach in hope to find her lost baby.
